IJzendijke, the Netherlands, 2006

As in previous years on 20 October we did a ceremony where in 1 944 at a farm on Isabelleweg near the town of Ijzendijke , the Netherlands a horrific accidental explosion occurred. The explosion caused the death of forty-one British and Canadian soldiers and caused injury to another fifty-one some of which would be fatal. The majority of the soldiers present on that fateful day were from 204 Armoured Assault Squadron, Royal Engineers and soldiers of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps of the 7th Infantry Brigade. The first part of the ceremony takes place at the Canadian War Cemetery in Adegem, Belgium where the soldiers that were found are buried the remainder are commemorated on the memorial at Groesbeek.

We were honoured this year to have a local Belgium school participate in the ceremony and gave out "thanks for the peace" cards to all present.
